CAR As COMMUNICATION SPACE

Immersive Remote Communication with Shared Awareness in Cars

OUR CHALLENGE

How might we create a system design

to enhance communication

within, between or around the vehicle

when thinking of the car as a communication space?

OUR Journey

We started exploring the problem space and learned a lot about communication
in cars, between cars, and around cars.
This led to more than ten different prototypes.
More details can be found in our prototyping journey.

In the end, we focused on remote in-car communication and came up with a vision.

OUR VISION

We aim to create the best immersive communication experience in the autonomous car so that passengers can stay in touch with their loved ones.

OUR PERSONA

Fully autonomous cars will redefine mobility for everyone, especially families. Children will be able to transport themselves independently, while parents will no longer have to spend hours on pickup logistics. Since cars will drive themselves, all passengers will be able to use their time in the car to communicate with family and friends.

Our targeted users of the system are
Emily, a 14-year-old teenager, and Frank, her dad.

Frank is caring about the wellbeing and safety of Emily and wants to stay connected to her.
On the other hand, Emily wants to be independent of her dad and enjoys using the autonomous car to get to all kinds of different places on her own.

We tailored our product to fit this scenario.

Emily

Frank

Emily should feel like Frank is sitting right next to her.

Besides the use case of communication between children and parents, our system can be used for any kind of social communication between people inside the car and their family and loved ones outside the vehicle.
